5 in 5 - April 2016 - Beginning to see more clearly now

Welcome to '5 in 5' where on the 5th of
each month I post 5 photos that I have
taken in 5 minutes.

This year has not gone as expected and different distractions have taken me off my usual path. Things I enjoy and planned have been over shadowed and I a beginning to find my way back and see more clearly again. So when I took my Mum to the hospital yesterday for a cataract operation it seemed quite fitting to take photos for this months 5in5 post. Excuse the quality of the photos. Sometimes it is about the story and trying to look inconspicuous in a hospital while taking photos!

I am decluttering at the moment and I sorted out a big bag of books to take to the hospital. They have a table and always have a request for donations.  Guess what?  I dashed out and forgot to take the bag. I was irritated with myself especially as I had rushed to register and label some of the books for BookCrossing, but I dropped these at another collection point in the evening and will prepare another bag for when I take my Mum back to the hospital in 3 weeks.

Once all the patients were called for their treatment the waiting room was empty.

Time for me to get my book out.  Seeing so many people waiting for cataract surgery made me  count my own blessings and appreciate being able to read.  We take so much for granted.   I am currently reading 'Bird by Bird - some Instructions on Writing and Life' by Anne Lamott.  I thoroughly recommend it if you like writing.

In a corner of the room is a cabinet with interesting equipment. It makes a fascinating addition.

And on another table is a box of spectacle cases. One little boy sorted through to find one to use for storing his pencils, the bright blue one had handles and was shaped like a handbag. He wanted to take this for his nan, who was here having surgery.  I was tempted to look through myself, but reminded myself I am decluttering.  I also decided to collect together my old cases and bring them next time.

Mum's surgery went well and everyone having the treatment said it was completely painless and straight forward. Some said they look forward to being able to read again without glasses so it seems there is lot to be thankful for.

  2. Snap! I'm in the middle of sorting out another load of books to take to the hospital that treated my late partner.

How's your decluttering going? Mine was going well until I had to start moving things around to make space for the new kitchen and cloakroom cabinets etc, so it's all ground to a halt again.

  4. Glad to hear your mother's surgery went well. Everyone I know who has had cataract surgery has reported great results. It's a great set of photos. I especially like the one of the chairs and of the equipment.

  5. What a great idea and giving us a picture of the day whilst carefully respecting everyone's privacy. I took my mother in law to have hers done a while ago . It's amazing how quickly it was all done. Quite different from when I was a student nurse and patients stayed in two nights at least! Hope your mum enjoys the benefits. My mum in law was amazed at how colours improved.

  7. So much to say about this post! First of all, I hope the patient is doing well and enjoying the benefits of surgery. My MIL in currently having regular injections for macular degeneration and they are helping her, which feels like a miracle. Anyone who has ever enjoyed making anything, I think, sometimes pauses and hopes for their sight to stay good.

I love the idea of the book donation, and the glasses cases..it's very cheery to think of the kind of nice staff who would come up with plans like that

  10. A very interesting set of photos - when I took my Dad for his operations, there was a glass case of old instruments too. I hope your Mum gets great benefit from her op, and that you feel you can get back on track again.

  11. Those snaps certainly tell a story, don't they. What a nice (and appropriate) place in which to see what you can see and capture it for us.
