5 in 5 - November 2017 - Pumkpin time!

Welcome to '5 in 5' where on the 5th of
each month I post 5 photos that I have
taken in 5 minutes.




Last year I posted about the award winning pumpkin grown at Hyde Hall RHS garden. This year Matthew Oliver beat his own record and so I went along to see.

There are lots of pumpkins to be seen this time of year and many homes and gardens have been decorated for Halloween. We were excited to be in York where the shop windows had amazing displays. In particular, the narrow Shambles and side streets were full of atmosphere, especially at night time. And we discovered 'The Shop That Shall Not be Named', it's Harry Potter theme even more magical than usual.

Back home we were too busy to decorate for Halloween and in the days after I saw some bargain pumpkins.
So I bought a large one and set to, making some soup. With a little chilli it makes a warming lunch for this time of year and there is lots to go in the freezer. It seemed a good opportunity for 5 in 5 photos:

I will chop the rest for the freezer to use in curries, pies and for risotto.

But one of my favourite ways of using pumpkin is roasted, with beetroot, and what other vegetables I might have that are suitable. These are such versatile squash and I'll be looking out for other new recipes to try - but I'm interested to know about your own favourites - please share!

  1. I've heard good things about Hyde Hall and it's not too far from me, I really ought to make the effort to get there!
    I've never cooked with pumpkin but I guess it's not that much different from butternut squash and I love that so that's another thing I ought to try too.

  2. I am always amazed at how big some of these pumpkins can get. I would say hands down pumpkin pie is a favourite. I have made pumpkin soup which I was trying to re-create from taste memory. We had the best pumpkin soup in Barbados! I think pumpkin risotto would be declious, must find the recipe for that.

  4. Great ideas for using pumpkins. I was inspired by Karen's photos to add my link to your blog. She always has such beautiful photos; I find myself going out taking more pictures because of her. I love the five in five idea. Great variety of pumpkins; I always think the ghost ones are cool. Happy to participate in your challenge.

  5. Halloween is not so famous in Japan, but it is always interesting to see many varieties of pumpkins for Halloween decoration and people dressed in curious costumes. You shared a great idea to use pumpkins! Your soup looks delicious! I have not seen such big yellow pumpkins here.Thank you for sharing.

  6. I do like seeing pumpkins but the rest of Halloween leaves me cold. I feel I should try and be more adventurous with pumpkin seeing your wonderful pictures and reading your suggestions. I did manage some soup"
