THE ARTISTS WAY - LAST CHANCE INVITATION!

A while back I posted about 'The Artist’s Way’, and how I planned to start working through the book again and run this as an online course. I have been blown away by the number of people who accepted the invitation to join me. A Facebook group has been set up and our group stretches from New Zealand to Canada, with many countries in between.  The course was launched on September 1st and the Facebook
group set up.

I have loved hearing about what members have done as Artists Dates. We have been inspired by each others ideas and offered encouragement and motivation for writing Morning Pages. And we are less than 2 weeks in!

The year ahead is going to be great fun!

 If you would like to join us you would be very welcome! There is more information in my previous post and cut off date is 1st October, so act fast to save disappointment!

To sign up please leave your full name and email address as a comment below, or email me.

Thank you!

The Artists Way - free online course - 2016

Several years ago I started to work through ‘The Artist’s Way’ a book written by Julia Cameron about how to work through difficulties so that you can be more creative.  I’d had my copy for many years. It was dog eared, written in, highlighted, and much read. But I never worked through the chapters in the way Julia invited: one chapter each week, with tasks to complete, 'Morning pages’ and 'Artist Dates'.

There were several reasons for this.  Firstly, this is a spiritual journey and the book refers throughout to God and The Great Creator. And if I am honest, this is where I found my initial barrier. But I had seen what the book offered and liked the idea of working though. So I decided that if I remained open minded and held onto my own sense of wonder and curiosity at things unexplained, and if I allowed myself to interpret Julia’s writing in a way that sat comfortable with me, then I might achieve this. Because let's face it, in the end it doesn’t matter the reason or how we get there. And in this regard Julia says:

“Because the Artist’s Way is in essence a spiritual path, initiated and practiced through creativity, this book uses the word God….. to succeed in this course no god concept is necessary. In fact many of our commonly held god concepts get in the way. Do not allow semantics to become one more block……. What we are talking about is creative energy…….  The point is not what you name it.  The point is that you try using it.  For many of us thinking of it as a form of spiritual electricity has been a useful jumping-off place”.

I found great value in writing morning pages but my routine would sometimes slip or get forgotten. I needed to be accountable so that I would do this regularly.  And I needed a way to work through the book that was manageable and realistic.  One chapter a week did not work for me. My life did not allow the time and commitment this needed.

So in 2013 I started an online group. Instead of a chapter a week we worked through a chapter a month.  This was manageable, and it
worked. We had a closed Facebook page where we could share ideas and experience and I embraced my year of working through the book. I gave it time and attention and my experience was powerful, amazing, curious, and hugely uplifting.  I grew and gained in so many different ways.   And though life is crazy at times, with balls all in the air at the same time, I knew I would miss the routine of The Artist’s Way when I came to the last chapter.  And just as I was preparing myself Julia wrote her final task:

“Reread this book.  Share it with a friend.  Remember that the miracle is one artist sharing with another….”
And so we did.

We came to a pause at chapter 10 and then time moved on....  and I can feel the difference.  The benefits far outweigh the time and effort it takes to work through the book. I miss what it gave me.

So it is time to start again. And what better time, because today is a new moon. This symbolises a time to rest before the next cycle begins, a time to set intentions for things you would like to make manifest or create. And rather than pick up where we left off, we will start afresh, for as Paul Gardner rightly says:

                        “A painting is never finished – it simply stops in interesting places”

I feel just as excited and inspired as I did when I first started this journey.  I don’t know where it will take me this time round;   some of the tasks might not be so relevant, or I might see them from a different perspective because I am not in the same place as I was then.  This will be revealed and is all part of the discovery.
Julia often talks about synchronicity, and just when I was thinking seriously about restarting the course several people, who I have never met, contacted me around the same time. They had seen my original blog post and wanted to know if they could join in. It felt like a nudge saying 'it's time to start'.
I propose to start afresh, with a new closed Facebook page. Naturally those who were in the previous group are welcome to join in, and some have already expressed interest.  And if you are interested, this is how it will work:

1.     You need a copy of Julia Cameron’s book ‘The Artist’s Way’ A Course in Discovering and Recovering your Creative Self.   You will also need 2 basic note books for writing in.  You do not need the workbook that is  available, unless you want it of course
2.       At the end of each chapter there are a list of 10 tasks.  I found these interesting, sometimes   fun, sometimes thought provoking. Like all things, you have choice in what or how much you do.
3.      Morning pages. Julia views these as essential.  Put simply, these are a stream of thoughts written daily. She recommends writing 3 pages in long hand first thing each morning.  I had to come up with a way that worked for me.  Writing first thing in the morning was not possible when I was working early morning shifts so I got into the routine of writing whenever I could.  Some days on waking, other days before going to bed, sometimes during the day.  To me the process and routine of writing was more important than the time. I did write long hand and I found the experience of daily writing powerful and something I continue.

4.       Artist’s Date. Now this was something that greatly excites me!  The idea of writing an allocated time each week in my diary, just for me to be playful or to try something new!  Again, for this to work for me  it needs to be flexible.

I have commitments and busy schedule.

I have excuses and reasons.

I am no different to anyone else.

I started out by listing things I could do, places I could go.  And some weeks I achieved this. Like the time I went for a walk along the river with my camera, or visited a new tea room. My biggest adventure was a 3 day road trip on my own. Other times a play date with a friend ticked the box.  Sometimes I forgot to write anything down or plan this special time.  In hindsight I might have remembered something that qualified as an artist date, but unless it was planned it never had the same impact.  Lesson learned.

5.      I never beat myself up if I missed a morning page or Artist Date. The course is meant to be enlightening, not punishment. That said, I take the course seriously.  I try hard to maintain focus and the rewards have outweighed any effort involved.

6.     Facebook.  I plan to set up a closed group and to use this forum as somewhere we can share our individual journeys and thoughts.  There is strength and support in people working together.

7.     As part of the closed group I will write a monthly newsletter. This will introduce each chapter as we work through them and I hope this will make the course more personal and interactive.

8.      The Artist’s Way is a creative course for everyone.  It doesn’t matter if you write, sew, paint, draw, take photos or paper craft. We are all creative in our own way.

9.       So!  Are you interested in signing up and getting started?!

10.   This free course will run 1stSeptember 2016 for 12 months.  I'd love you to join me in this!

11.   I will be preparing the first newsletter and sending this out on 1st September.  To benefit from the group it is best to sign up at the beginning so that you have time to work through each chapter.  Some of the exercises might trigger unwanted or uncomfortable thoughts or feelings.  This group is about helping each other to work through these difficult moments and to offer kindness and support.

12.   To sign up – email me with your full name saying that you would like to take part in The Artist’s Way course.   To join the closed Facebook Page (sharing with others and being part of a group is what helped me to maintain focus and gain more from the experience) then also send me your Facebook contact details so that I can add you.

If you have any questions please email or leave a comment.   Here's to new beginnings!

5 in 5 - April 2014 - THE GLASS SUN

                                         Welcome to '5 in 5' where on the 5th of
each month I post 5 photos that I have
taken in 5 minutes.

 This month I thought I'd share photos taken on a retreat.  I'd gone outside in the sun for a brief break and there are always good photos to be had by the water.  But today I was in London and just last evening I learnt that there was a 'sun' sculpture made of glass in one of the parks.  I didn't know where this was in relation to my meeting, but as luck had it, I discovered it was walking distance.  So I set off full of anticipation and I was not disappointed!  So this month, no photos taken in the sun, but a sun sculpture instead.  I love the unexpected, don't you!

I loved how it flowed with the branches of trees

and had wonderful shapes

and even more detail when you looked closer .

And I bet it looks even more amazing at night when it is lit up.

Here is more information about the sculpture and the artist.  If you have a chance, it is well worth a visit.  And there is more of Dale Chihuly's beautiful work to see in the Halcyon Gallery nearby.

~~~~~~~~~~
Thank you for popping by and to everyone who has taken part in this monthly challenge.  I really look forward to seeing your photos and I hope you are inspired to get out your camera and join in. Here is the plan:
1.  Choose a location.
2.  Have your camera ready.
3.  Set a timer for 5 minutes.
4.  Take as many photos you can until the time is up.
5.  Choose 5 photos to download and share by using the link tool.
   You have until the 25th of the month to add your photos.
And if you want to know more there are details here.
One more thing - when you use the link tool, please click on your post title.  This will show the web address. Please right click, copy and paste this as your link.  This will take readers directly to your '5 in 5' blog page and be easier for them to find.
And don't forget, you have until 25th to post your link!
DOES SOCIAL MEDIA GET IN YOUR WAY?
How many of us have niggles or things we want to change but struggle because we are stuck, lack confidence or bravery?  Well, don't give up hope. I discovered sometimes we block ourselves or get in our own way of making things happen.
Take last week. I was off work and planned to use some of this time doing things around the house that I don't normally have time for. I made up my mind not to switch the computer on until later in the day.  It is far too easy to think:
'Oh, I'll check emails' as I pass or,
'I'll just see if there are any updates on Facebook'.....
The next thing an hour or two has passed.  Are you the same?
And so I started one thing, which led to another and another, and my energy and momentum just kept flowing. It was a huge achievement and at the end of the day I had so much to show for my time and effort. I felt great!
 At the end of the day I switched on the computer and very timely I
saw a post about how Facebook and social media can be linked with avoidance. Brene' Brown suggests that when we are struggling it is easier to post on Facebook or twitter and to feel uplifted by immediate comment or encouragement. It can also help us to avoid the problem or thing we find difficult to face, as the gratification of feeling supported or in company reduces our unwanted feeling. I immediately saw a connection, about how easy it is for me to sit on the computer and to feel part of a wider network of like minded people and friends, and how much more preferable this is to facing difficult things such as de-cluttering, sorting out paperwork or other mundane tasks.
And yet by not switching on the computer I discovered I felt more satisfied by what I achieved and I had far more to show for my day.  So I will embrace this and try to make it a regular habit. To do what I need to do and THEN switch on the computer!
Some of you will know that I am working through The Artists Way*.  Interestingly I started Chapter 4 today and I am encouraged to deprive myself of books and other distractions for one week. It doesn't surprise me that this comes up now to remind me of a lesson learned. So I will include tv and the likes of Facebook since these also occupy lots of my time and take me away from other things I could be doing. And I don't just mean chores, I mean being creative and having fun too. Because on days when I come home from work and then make the most of my evening by going out or doing something interesting (rather than just watching tv or sitting on the computer) my time stretches and a day can feel like a weekend.
And so while I will find it difficult to restrict these things for a week I will embrace this idea with relish. Because I know I have lots of other things I can enjoy and look forward to, and that these are a distraction. I have lots of ideas for blog posts, photos (more than I care to think about) waiting to be organised into files, and lots of projects in progress.  I am hoping to catch up with some of these and to continue other things I have started because I have learnt that facing things we sometimes avoid isn't always as bad once we get going!
INVITING ANXIETY!
A Happy New Year to you!!  I hope it has got off to a good start and that you have good things to look forward to.
My head is popping with ideas and plans (as always) and today I am off work.  I considered a day of play and my dining room is raring to go.  Every surface is covered, left from card and gift making, unpacking from my last retreat and crop, and new projects. BUT - my urge was to be creative in a different way. I have 2 bedrooms and a cabin that have lost floors and surfaces. Believe it or not I am a home-maker, though my long hours of paid work leave me little energy or time left to have the home I want and once had. They have become dumping ground for everything we don't know where to put. And so this morning instead of surrounding myself with paper and glue and pretty things I have rolled up my sleeves and waded in to the small bedroom.  There are so many books I don't know what to do with. Many are my children's, once much loved and fondly remembered. I kept them for grand children but they too have so many books. I can be grateful for this love being passed on but they also do not have room for more. And so I need to make big decisions, what to keep, pass on, or take to charity shops. And if it were just books, perhaps the room would not be so cluttered. But I also have my Dad's LP's and other treasured belongings. Most we have parted with, but some are hard.  He died in 2008 so it really is time to make decisions.
I need my home and space back. I need to tread slowly but I need to make progress this year.
YOU MUST FIRST COME ALIVE"
I DO AND I WILL.
So right now it is time to get back.  It's not all work and no play though.  My friend Jill is coming round this evening so I have that to look forward to. It's always good to have a goal!
THE ARTIST WAY - FREE ONLINE COURSE
A year ago I started to work through ‘The Artist’s Way’, a book written by Julia Cameron.  I’ve had my copy for many years. It is dog eared, written in, highlighted and much read.  But I had never worked through the chapters in the way Julia invited:  One chapter each week.  With tasks to complete.  'Morning pages’, otherwise known as daily journaling.  And 'Artist Dates'.
I have used Julia's ideas to write. I did it regularly for a while.  But over time the routine got lost and I stopped writing and forgot about it.  Except on a couple of occasions when it felt helpful to write. Then I’d close my journal and forget about it again until the next time.
I did not think about working through the Artist’s Way book, because my life did not allow the time it needed.  But that changed when I was invited to join a small online group.   Instead of a chapter a week we would do a chapter a month.  THIS was manageable.  The idea excited me.  And last July I began.
What followed was far from what I expected.  Julia claims that it is important to work through creative blocks and allow ourselves the freedom to explore these.  She also encourages you to look for synchronicity – and yes, you can be cynical and put experience down to ‘luck’ or ‘coincidence’ but I choose to be open minded.  I decided to embrace this time working through the book, and to put my doubts aside and to go with the flow.  And I was blown away by some of my experiences.
This is a spiritual journey and the book refers throughout to God and The Great Creator.  And if I am honest, this is where I found my initial barrier.  But I decided that if I remained open minded and held onto my own sense of wonder and curiosity at things unexplained, and if I allowed myself to interpret Julia’s writing in a way that sat comfortable with me, then I knew it was the right time for me to work through this book and to commit to this.   At the end, it doesn’t matter the reason or how we get there.  I trust my intuition and if some prefer to believe that this is a higher influence, call it God or any other name, that’s fine.  And in this regard Julia says:
“Because the Artist’s Way is in essence a spiritual path, initiated and practiced through creativity, this book uses the word God….. to succeed in this course no god concept is necessary. In fact many of our commonly held god concepts get in the way. Do not allow semantics to become one more block……. What we are talking about is creative energy…….  The point is not what you name it.  The point is that you try using it.  For many of us thinking of it as a form of spiritual electricity has been a useful jumping-off place”.
And so I embraced my year of working through the book.  I gave time and attention, and my experience has been powerful, amazing, curious, and hugely uplifting.  I have grown and gained in so many different ways, I can feel more than describe it.   And though my life is crazy at times, with balls all in the air at the same time, and a work life balance to try and manage, I knew I would miss the routine of The Artist’s Way.  And I was sad when I started the final chapter, knowing this was the end.
Yes… I could continue the Artist’s Dates and the daily journaling, but there was so, so much more.  And just as I was preparing myself for the end Julia wrote her final task:
“Reread this book.  Share it with a friend.  Remember that the miracle is one artist sharing with another….”
And so that’s exactly what I plan to do!
I feel just as excited and inspired as I did a year ago, when I first started this journey.  I don’t know where it will take me a second time round.  Some of the tasks might not be so relevant, or I might see them from a different perspective this time.  This is a continued time for discovery.  And if you are interested in joining me the following information might be helpful:
1.     You need a copy of Julia Cameron’s book ‘The Artist’s Way’ A Course in Discovering and Recovering your Creative Self.   You will also need 2 basic note books for writing in.  You do not need the workbook that is also available
2.       At the end of each chapter there are a list of 10 tasks.  I found these interesting, sometimes fun, sometimes thought provoking. Like all things, you have choice in what or how much you do.
3.      Morning pages. Julia views these as essential.  Put simply, these are a stream of thoughts written daily. I did write long hand and I found the experience of daily writing powerful and something I plan to continue.
4.       Artist’s Date. Now this was something that greatly excited me!  The idea of writing an allocated time each week in my diary, just for me to be playful or to try something new!  Julia suggests a block of time, and again for this work for me it needed to be flexible.
I work shifts.
I have commitments and busy schedule.
I have excuses and reasons.
I am no different to anyone else.
But I started out by listing things I could do, places I could go.  And some weeks I achieved this. Like the time I went for a walk along the river with my camera, or visited a new tea room.  My biggest adventure was a 3 day road trip on my own. Other times a play date with a friend ticked the box.  Sometimes I forgot to write anything down or plan this special time.  In hindsight I might have remembered something that qualified as an artist date, but unless it was planned it never had the same impact.  Lesson learned.
5.      I never beat myself up if I missed a morning page or Artist Date. The course was meant to be fun and rewarding, not punishment. That said, I did take the course seriously.  I tried hard to maintain focus and the rewards outweighed any effort involved.
6.     Facebook.  I plan to set up a closed group and to use this forum as somewhere we can share our individual journeys and thoughts.  There is strength and support in people working together.
7.     As part of the closed group I will send a monthly newsletter by email. This will introduce each chapter as we work through them and I hope this will make the course more personal and interactive.
8.      The Artist’s Way is a creative course for everyone.  It doesn’t matter if you write, sew, paint, draw, take photos or paper craft. If you create – you are invited.
9.       So!  Are you interested in signing up and getting started?!
10.   This free course will run 1st October 2013 for 12 months.  I'd love you to join me in this!
11.   I will be preparing the first newsletter and sending this out on 1st October.  To benefit from the group it is best to sign up at the beginning so that you have time to work through each chapter.  Members will be able to join after this date with understanding that they may need to work through any missed chapters for the course to be personally beneficial.
12.   To sign up – email me with your full name saying that you would like to take part in The Artist’s Way course:  sandie17@talktalk.net
If you want to join the closed Facebook Page (and I hope you will, as sharing with others and being part of a group is what helped me to maintain focus and gain more from the experience) then also send me your Facebook contact details so that I can add you.
And if you have any questions please email or leave a comment.   Thank you!
And finally, if you have read Julia Cameron’s book or worked through the chapters I would be interested to hear your thoughts and experience.  I wish my prejudice or barrier had not been around when I first bought my copy some years ago, but then again, perhaps that was not the right time for me to work through the chapters.  After all, there is a time and place for all things.  And at least I can look forward to starting over again.
