5 in 5 - October 2017 - Where Inside and Outside Meet

Welcome to '5 in 5' where on the 5th of

each month I post 5 photos that I have

taken in 5 minutes.

For the past year I have been making regular visits to London, as part of my NLP Training and Practice. I have really enjoyed the opportunity to stay in a hotel near the Embankment and to explore the local area. There are so many photo opportunities and some I have already shared here, and once again I was spoilt for choice.

I resisted the urge to take the familiar and walked with an open mind, waiting for inspiration.  Then I looked through a window and noticed the reflection. It was a strange juxta position, where inside and outside meet. So this month, here are my collection of 5 photos taken in 5 minutes - it's good to look at things differently sometimes.

5 in 5 - September 2017 - Melanie

Melanie is my friend who lives in Australia and she loves photography.  Every month since the start of this challenge Melanie has taken part in this monthly meme and as she doesn't have her own blog, I post here. I love that we have found a way for her to take part. Over to you Melanie:

This week the Adelaide Royal Show is being held.  This is an annual event which runs for a week and always begins on the first Friday in September.  The event takes over the Wayville Show Grounds near the city of Adelaide completely.  There are heaps of competitive entries for numerous categories some of which are livestock, art & craft and food & wine.  Then there are regular entertainment sessions, numerous exhibitors, lots of sideshows and funfair rides and a whole pavilion devoted to Showbags (bags of goodies with a theme e.g Spiderman, Mars bars). I had no idea about Showbags until I went to my first Adelaide Royal Show in 1986.  Apparently this year there were more than 400 different Showbags so they could easily have provided me with a 5 in 5 subject.   The first Livestock Show was held in 1843.  It was held in the yards of a city pub and only consisted of Livestock so the form of the Royal Show has changed vastly over the years.  This year I went to the Royal Show with my daughter and grandsons. The areas we visited were really dictated by my three year old grandson and my choice for September 5 in 5 photos are those taken in the Vintage Machinery area.  This was the first area we came to and my three year old grandson had to be dragged away from the area in the end.  He was fascinated with all the working machinery as was I.  Most of the machinery working was using steam.  Each had a plaque explaining where it was used and I was very slack as I did not make a note of what each piece had been used for. You can see the middle picture is of a portable petrol engine.  The top LHS picture is of a pump  used around 1890 to pump water from water tanks to a house higher up a hill in an Adelaide area called Mount Lofty.  The bottom RHS picture is of an apple peeler.  The chap looking after the machines demonstrated how it worked.  It could peel and core six apples at a time. Sorry I do not recall what the other two bits of machinery are despite having to read the plaques more than once to my Grandson.  Hope you enjoy seeing these photos and maybe you can identify the photos I failed to remember.

Thank you Melanie! It's always interesting to hear about events in other countries and this Royal Show does not sound unlike ones we have here the in UK. In my youth I would always go to our county annual County Show. Sadly the grounds were sold and the show relocated. It lost it's character so I never went again and I hear it became a more commercial affair. It's a shame, as a traditional show is something special. It's good to see they continue to thrive in Australia.
